The four words

Organic, vegan, cruelty free, natural

These are the four words that sell this category — and the four that cause the most trouble when they appear with nothing behind them.

Organic

Depends on certification by an accredited body, product by product. It is not a marketing adjective.

Evidence: [CONFIRM certificate]

Vegan

No animal-derived ingredient. A vegan mark is issued by a certifier and applies per product, not per shop.

Evidence: [CONFIRM certificate]

Cruelty free

Not tested on animals. Several Brazilian states ban animal testing for cosmetics, which changes what the mark signifies here.

Evidence: [CONFIRM certificate]

Natural

The slipperiest of the four: it has no single legal definition. Which is why this site describes what is inside instead of repeating the adjective.

Evidence: [CONFIRM certificate]

None of these four words appears anywhere on this site as a settled claim. A March 2020 article records the shop saying that “most products are organic”, that they are “99% vegan” and that “all are cruelty free”. That is five and a half years old, it did not come from the shop to us, and a catalogue percentage moves every time a new supplier arrives. Republishing it as today’s fact would be misleading advertising if it were wrong — CDC arts. 30 and 37.
The right move is the opposite, and it sells better: say which lines are certified, by whom and since when. A named mark with a year beats “99% vegan” in any reading.

Brands

Forty-odd brands, and not one of them written here

The curation is the product. It is also the most valuable search asset this shop owns — and the only one that cannot be published without permission.

Why a brands page is worth so much. People looking for natural cosmetics almost never search “natural cosmetics shop”: they search a brand name plus the city. Every brand the shop carries is a doorway that does not currently exist. A 2020 article spoke of more than 40 brands, Brazilian and imported from Germany, Italy, the USA, Lithuania and Sweden. [CONFIRM the current list]
No brand name has been written on this page, and that is deliberate. A third party’s mark is a third party’s property: publishing the list needs written permission from each supplier, and several distribution agreements have a clause about exactly this. It is the first thing to ask for and it usually comes back quickly, because it suits both sides. [CONFIRM permission brand by brand]

Frequently asked

What people ask before coming to the shop

Where is the shop?

At Multi Open Shopping in Florianópolis. The unit and floor inside the centre [CONFIRM] — and that is the question that arrives most often by message for a shop inside a mall, so it belongs in the footer of every page.

Do you sell online?

A shop is live at terramaya.com.br, but we could not confirm it belongs to the same company and it does not mention Florianópolis anywhere. [CONFIRM] If it is yours, click and collect is the obvious fit.

Are all the products vegan?

This site does not claim that. A March 2020 article records the shop saying “99% vegan”, but five and a half years on, with suppliers coming and going, that percentage cannot be republished as today’s fact. [CONFIRM product by product] What works better is marking each line on the shelf and on the page.

And organic? Is there a certificate?

Organic depends on certification by an accredited body and applies per product, not per shop. [CONFIRM which lines are certified, by which certifier and since when]

Which brands do you carry?

The list is the shop’s best search asset and it is not written here, because a third party’s mark needs written permission from the supplier. [CONFIRM the list and the permission]

Can I bring my jar and refill it?

Refilling is the easiest practice to prove and the one that builds the most loyalty. [CONFIRM whether there is a refill station and for which products]

Do you accept Pix?

Pix is the dominant method in Brazilian retail and the answer is almost always yes, but nothing has been confirmed by you. [CONFIRM the payment methods]

Is this Terra Maya’s official site?

No. It is a speculative mockup. The profile we were given sits behind a login wall, the domain the press points at does not resolve, and no price, brand or certification was invented to fill the page.
